  • What is the Big Bang?

The Big Bang is the special name that scientists have given to the start of the universe.

Scientists used to think that the universe didn’t have a beginning, but some scientists, including lots who believed in God, started to find clues that helped them see that the universe was getting bigger and bigger, and cooler and cooler, and had been for a very long time. This made them think that the universe had been smaller and hotter in the past, which helped them to work out that the universe had a beginning point a very, very long time ago (about 13.8 billion years ago).

At first, all the stuff in the whole universe was squished into a single very tiny, very hot point, but then very quickly the universe started to grow bigger and bigger and bigger.

Since the Big Bang, all the stars, planets and everything else in the universe have slowly been made out of the stuff that was there at the start of the universe.
